Pastor Absalom
(2 Samuel 15.6)

“So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.” (2 Samuel 15:6)

It didn’t take much. A chariot, some fanboys, and a daily ploy to convince the people of Israel he was more available than David, and Absalom stole the hearts of the people. Some cunning, some persistence, and they were in his pocket. Were they fans of Yahweh? It didn’t matter. They were fans of his.

Too much work in the name of Christ is conducted in this manner. The hearts of the people fall prey to the manipulative machinations of leaders who crave the praise. Rather than celebrate Christ, these leaders receive celebration. Rather than point others to Jesus, they point people to themselves.

In the service of Christ, we must be careful. Pastors, small group leaders, young adult ministry leaders — you name it — all are tempted to take the glory. All are tempted to steal hearts for themselves. Jesus said, “Follow me.” Only he could say it. Paul said it, but added, “As I follow Christ.” We aim to point people to him.

However, with a little posturing, we are prone to thieve the hearts of God’s people. With some manipulation, we can get people to celebrate us, not Christ. Let it not be. The Son of David should sit on the throne. Let us have nothing to do with diminishing his role or position. He must not be displaced.

Archival Post: Planning & Organization – The Need

In 2006, I was drowning. Our church had recently gone through massive changes, and I found myself in a brand new role. After years of working primarily with college and high school groups, I now found myself as an assistant pastor to the general church body. I was asked to wear quite a few hats. I was in a million meetings. I wrote down a million things a day. And almost every day, I had no idea where to start. (3 Minutes/700 Words)

Archival Post & Podcast: Appreciate Christ’s Generosity

Even though the church is unbreakable and one, we are diverse and varied. Paul tells us “grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” The grace Paul writes of is not the saving grace of Christ, but the enabling grace of Christ. (2 Minutes/600 Words)

Archival Post: What I Learned From a Man of God

On every other day of the week, Truckee High School is just that, a high school. Today it is a different institution of learning, a house of worship, a place to connect with the living God. Christ-followers ascend to it and make the cafeteria a place befitting a congregation. It is time for church. (3 Minutes/800 Words)
